Route 76

On my route 76 ride to work this morning there was;

1 Open-mouth-boy
1 Tall-man who banged his head; twice
2 adults who felt that their toddlers needed their seats more than heavily-pregnant-lady
1 Strange-woman-singing out loud in that I-have-my-headphones-on-can't-hear-myself kind of way with her eyes closed (she also did a rap!)
1 Youth who has no headphones and lousy taste in music
1 Distinct lack of coke-n-kids
20 People watching strange-woman-singing
2 people talking about her

Bobby’s Heartbreak

Facebook has oh so much to answer for…..mostly all those people who you never thought you’d see again!

Facebook was how Bobby found me 27 years after I walked out of his room with my best mate Jane in a huge huff.

I had been getting to know Bobby. We went to different high schools but he made the journey over to my neighborhood with his best friend to visit Jane. His best friend had the hots for Jane.

We were all 15. Everything was so serious back then.

She introduced us. I’m told it was love at first sight for Bobby.

I didn’t like him. His head was too big.

But we hung out a lot and he turned out to be a really nice guy. Who adored me.

He won me over.

Somehow we lost touch and I don’t remember why. But Facebook reunited us and he came to my birthday party last year. We went on a date to the theater a few weeks later.

On the way there he asked “do you remember the last time you spoke to me?”

“Well it was around Valentine’s Day and I invited you over to my place with Jane. You both sat in my room and I went off to get sodas. When I came back you had a face like thunder, jumped up from your seat and walked out dragging Jane with you. After that, every time I came around you ignored me .”

“I was heartbroken” he said “you never spoke to me again and it took me five years to get over it”

I didn’t remember why I walked out but he proceeded to tell me.

Apparently after finding Jane on Facebook a month before she put him in contact with me, he asked her if she knew why I had ‘dumped him’ at valentine’s?

Jane told him that while in his room I came across a half written valentines card to some girl called Flo. By all accounts it was gushing with admission of undying love. I flung it to the floor, squared up to Jane and insisted that we left.

To make matters worse a week after the event he went to see Jane and implored her to find out what had happened. To which she replied that she had ‘no idea but you know that Minty can be unstable at times’

Who needs enemies….right?

So 27 years later, driving through London Bobby took the long-awaited opportunity to set things straight.

“ I just wanted you to know that my room was such a freaking mess that I lied and always used my big brothers room to impress you girls. My brother married Flo the following year. They have 4 kids and live in Enfield”

Every morning when I get to work I make a things-to-do list.

This morning I have such delights as;

  1. Raise 16 works orders
  2. Fill out my appraisal form
  3. Attend 2 meetings
  4. Sort out some software for a department
  5. Organise company picnic

Not much? Well the meetings will eat up at least 3 hours of my day, the orders another hour. The dreaded appraisal form is a half day job at least and as for the software issue…………..well how long is a piece of string?

Suddenly 8 hours is not enough.

And so it is with life.

I have a to-do-list for the year;

  1. Have a holiday
  2. Creative writing course
  3. Theory driving test
  4. Ride bike to work 3 times a week
  5. Practical driving test
  6. Complete insanity
  7. Change job

Okay so the holiday is done and there may be another one on the cards at Christmas.

As its April already I’ve kind of sold myself short by not getting on with the tasks at hand so I’ve been investigating number 2 – creative writing course.

The obvious place to start in London was The City Lit.

At the City Lit there are over 20 different 1 day courses starting at £45 (with concession prices starting at £17!) I ‘m thinking of enrolling in either; ‘autobiography into fiction’ or ‘writing for children’ courses (or both!)

So number 2 is in hand. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Driving! 3 and 5. This old chestnut keeps rearing its ugly head. I’m always in a funk about this one.

I want to drive but don’t want to and possibly can’t afford the drama of a car. I love London transport. For all the complaints it’s not as expensive as owning and maintaining and parking a car in London. It connects you to all areas without traffic jams and the inconvenience of forgetting to fill up.

Should I shouldn’t I? I’m in my forties and I’ve survived so far!

Cycling. Jeeze I love my bike! I’m fortunate enough to have most of my cycling route to work through Hackney. Riding the back streets of Clapton and Dalston is an absolute pleasure. Why don’t I do this more often?

Well because I’m not organised enough to make time for me! I don’t pack my bag of an evening ready for the next morning and I don’t plan my outfits. So I get up in the morning and start the rummaging through the drawers and wardrobe to find THAT top or THOSE tights……….nothing is where I think it is. By the time that adventure is over it’s too late to organize and pack a bag for cycling.

Insanity and a new job —- that’s another blog

Time for a G&T my darlings………….
